Learning to Fly with Durango Flight Instruction

Exciting & Rewarding Adventure

Flight school in Durango can be an exciting and rewarding adventure. While it does require a commitment, almost anyone can become a pilot. The pilot needs to be at least 16 years old to fly solo, 17 to receive a pilot certificate, and be in generally good health.

The Three Phases of Flight Instruction

Flight school and private pilot lessons can be divided into three phases. The first is the pre-solo phase. In this phase, the flight student receives dual instruction in the basics of aircraft control, airport operations (including takeoffs and landings), and FAA regulations.

The second or Solo phase consists of the student practicing on their own intermixed with dual flight instruction in the Durango area.

The final or Cross Country phase consists of both dual flight instruction and solo practice of the procedures involved in flying from airport to airport over long distances.

Concurrent with these three phases the student will complete the knowledge portion of the training either through a ground school or home study course supplemented by the instructor.

Pilot Certification in Durango, CO

A student applying for a pilot certificate and private pilot lessons in Durango must meet minimum knowledge and experience requirements established by the FAA, as well as pass a written and practical test given by Designated Pilot Examiners. The minimum hour requirements are 40 hours if receiving independent instruction

The cost of achieving a pilot certificate can range quite a bit. Some people will buy a plane to learn, but most will rent a plane. Some students want to learn in a higher performance plane from the beginning because we live at such high altitude. Some go to expensive flight schools and finance their training. More regular lessons usually mean less overall cost. Fees for books, equipment, and exams range from $600 to $1000.

Please feel free to contact Durango Flight Instructor with any questions.

A typical introductory flight lesson will consist of an outline of the course of instruction, followed by an explanation of aircraft controls and their functions. The flight portion will normally last about 1 hour. During the flight portion the instructor will explain and demonstrate the use of the controls.

The Intro Lesson is subject to instructor and airplane availability, so if you want the lesson to be on a particular date please confirm both before purchasing. Sometimes due to unexpected weather, aircraft issues, or scheduling conflicts can arise.
